Just a follow-up on yesterday's post about the child pornography spam. The story in Newsday appeared only in the Queens edition--currently online at http://www.newsday.com/mainnews/rnmi041r.htm. Detective Angel Ramirez of the Manhattan South Vice Squad told Newsday "There's an ongoing investigation in conjunction with the FBI pertaining to this. We are questioning somebody but we have no one in custody." ("Queens at Heart of 'Net Scam" 10/22/96) This afternoon the San Francisco Examiner reported that FBI agents in San Francisco, New York, and Baltimore are investigating. (Apparently the e-mail had been sent to the San Francisco Examiner, too.) http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/examiner/article.cgi?year=1996&month=10&day=22&article=NEWS8516.dtl They're working on a follow-up story. A rumor linking the spam to a flame-war in rec.pets.dogs.behavior turned out to be spurious. A Menlo Park, California man had the same name as was listed with the address in Jackson Heights.
